About Aubigny
The picturesque little town of Aubigny lies some 200km south of Paris in the centre of the heavily wooded Cher region which is popular for its many country pursuits.
Like Haddington, much has been done to preserve many of its historic buildings. The old 15th and 16th century
half-timbered houses,
the Château des Stuarts (now the hôtel de ville), the cheerful Rue du Prieuré, the Place du Marché
and the Eglise St. Martin are all a delight to see. A few miles outside the town are the impressive 15th century
Château de Blancafort and the Château de la Verrerie, which was the latter-day
residence of the Stuarts. It has a charming setting and is a fine example of Renaissance architecture.
Similar in size to Haddington, Aubigny has a population of about 6,000 and is an important commercial centre for the
surrounding area, with its main source of employment being light engineering, machine tools, furniture and
garments. Aubigny is a perfect centre from which to explore this attractive region.
Within easy reach are nearby Gien on the river Loire (27km), Sancerre and its famous vineyards (43km), to the south Bourges
and its lovely cathedral (45km). To the north-west lies Orléans (69km) and the famous
châteaux of the Loire (96km).
Recreations in Aubigny include swimming, boating, and fishing. There is a spacious public park with pleasant walks and also excellent facilities for camping.
